Kitchen Cabinet installation

Kitchen cabinet installation is a fine art.  Very much like building furniture, installing cabinets takes a certain amount of skill, developed over years of ‘practice’.

[av_dropcap2 color=”default” custom_bg=”#444444″]D[/av_dropcap2]esigning a kitchen is, in itself, an art.  But if the person installing the cabinets doesn’t understand the design, how cabinets are installed or the correct installation method, the end result won’t have the same effect.  Cabinet installation is a, somewhat, time consuming task, to do correctly.  A quality cabinet installer will take the time to look over the design, creating a mental picture of how the units and trims/mouldings will be used together to build the final desired look.  They will then begin to pull a layout, based on the design plan, and begin marking the walls for the location each cabinet.  Next, they will check the floor for level to determine where the high side or corner is.  This is very important because this is where they will want to begin their cabinet installation of the base units.  If the level of the floor isn’t checked, then the base cabinets will not be level for the installation of the countertops, the installer will end up spending more time un-installing cabinets then re-installing them the correct way, or they will spend time cutting the bottoms off of the cabinets to make them level…  It is always easier to check the level first, then they know where to start….  Saves time, saves money.

When installing wall cabinets, there are a few things that a quality cabinet installer will do to insure that the wall cabinets are installed correctly.

First, they will check the level of the ceiling.  Finding the lowest point, they will check the dimension from the base cabinet, up to where the bottom of the lowest wall cabinets should begin.  If there is enough space, (NKBA Standard is 19-1/2″, cabinet to cabinet, allowing 1-1/2″ for the countertop material, leaving 18″ of clear space between.) they will put a mark and this is the point at which they will begin the installation of the wall cabinets.  In some cases, or by special request by the client, they may start their installation a little higher, given that there is enough space, between there and the ceiling, to do so.

With both upper and lower cabinet installation, it is important that the faces line up properly.  This can be tricky, and takes a skilled hand, as I have yet to find a wall in a house that is perfectly straight, flat or plumb.  It requires clamping, feeling, shimming, feeling again, and adjusting prior to being able to secure to the wall and then to the adjoining cabinet, if there is one.

Skills like this come with time, training and “in the field” practice.  If you are looking for someone to install your kitchen cabinets, you want to look around and don’t be affraid to ask questions.  Ask for pictures of their work.  Ask for references.  A good quality cabinet installer is going to be [roud of their work and will be more than happy to provide this information to you without question or reservations.
