Skylights are becoming more and more popular in home remodeling projects.  With a large shift going toward “Green” building practices, skylights are an excellent way to gain more natural light into your home, without increasing your use of electricity.  There are several different stypes and style of skylights available on the market today.

Tubular skylights are gaining much popularity as they offer many benefits with minimal cost.  Tube style skylights are an excellent option for smaller spaces such as bathrooms or closets.  They are minimal in size but huge in light!  Another distinct advantage to tubular skylights is that, due to their minimal size, they minimize heat gain and heat loss in your home.

The more traditional style of skylights, Deck Mount and Curb Mount skylights, are still very popular with many people.  They are larger in sixe and, depending on the application and location, they can offer more light to the space.  These type of skylights range in size from approximately 14″x45″ to approximately 21″x70″, and many more in between.  They can be fixed (non-opening) or operable, meaning they can be opened for ventilation.  The operable type can be opened either manually or by an electric motor assembly.

Then there are the style that are often referred to as “Roof Windows”.  Roof windows are basicaly just as their name suggests, windows in the roof.  Similar to skylights, but typically are placed on roofs with a much steeper pitch.  They are typically finished on the inside, much like a traditional window and are used much like a gable window, without the gable.
